When Cacao Meets Mushrooms

When Cacao Meets Mushrooms

Cacao with mushrooms is becoming more popular, but it’s often misunderstood. Let’s make one thing clear from the start:
This product does not contain psychedelic mushrooms.
It does not cause hallucinations, altered perception, or “trips.” The mushrooms used here are commonly used in food and supplements and are safe for daily consumption.

The cacao stays exactly the same

The base is still pure ceremonial cacao.Nothing about the cacao changes. It is made from the same whole cacao beans, unroasted, mantaining the same natural composition.
The only difference is that a small amount of mushrooms is added. So you’re not replacing cacao with something else, you’re simply adding to it.

What are functional mushrooms?

The term “functional” simply means they are used for a purpose beyond taste. These mushrooms have been part of daily diets in many cultures for centuries, especially in Asia. Today, they are widely used in food products and supplements. They are not drugs and do not affect your perception or behavior.
You can think of them in the same category as ingredients like matcha, turmeric or ginger, commonly used, easy to include in a daily routine.

The 7 mushrooms in this blend

This cacao contains a blend of seven well-known mushrooms:

Reishi – traditionally used in China, often prepared as tea
Chaga – grows on birch trees and naturally contains antioxidants
Shiitake – widely used in cooking worldwide
Maitake – commonly used in Japanese cuisine
Lion’s Mane – recognisable by its soft, distinctive shape
Cordyceps (Sinensis) – traditionally used in Asian cultures
White Fungus (Tremella) – used in drinks and desserts in Asia

Each of these mushrooms is commonly consumed as food or extract.

Why combine mushrooms with cacao?

Ceremonial cacao naturally contains theobromine, a compound known for providing a more gradual and longer-lasting effect than caffeine. It also contains naturally occurring nutrients such as magnesium, iron and antioxidants (flavanols).

By adding mushrooms, you expand this profile with additional compounds, including beta-glucans, polysaccharides and antioxidants, which are commonly associated with:

  • supporting the immune system
  • helping the body deal with everyday oxidative stress

All in one drink. In a single cup, you combine compounds from both cacao and mushrooms, without needing multiple products or supplements.
This makes it a simple way to include:

  • magnesium, which supports normal muscle and nervous system function
  • iron, which contributes to normal energy levels
  • antioxidants, which help protect cells from oxidative stress
  • beta-glucans and polysaccharides, commonly linked to immune support

as part of your daily routine.

How can a small amount still work?

The mushrooms are added in concentrated form, such as extracts or finely milled powders. This means their compounds are more easily available than in whole mushrooms. The effect is not based on one large dose. Instead, it comes from:

  • consistent daily use
  • small amounts over time
  • combining multiple mushrooms in one blend

This is similar to how ingredients like matcha or turmeric are used. You don’t need large quantities, regular use is what matters.

What does it taste like?

The taste is still very much cacao. Rich, slightly bitter and full-bodied, just like pure ceremonial-grade cacao. The mushrooms do not create a noticeable “mushroom taste.”Instead, they blend into the cacao and add a slightly deeper, more rounded flavour. Compared to pure ceremonial cacao, the difference is subtle. The base remains the same, with a slightly more layered taste.
If you’re used to cacao, it will feel familiar. If you’re new to it, expect something closer to dark chocolate than hot chocolate.

Can you drink it every day?

This blend is made for daily use. You can drink it in the morning instead of coffee, or at any moment during the day. Preparation is simple:

  • add cacao to hot water or plant-based milk
  • stir or blend until smooth

No complicated steps. No special occasion needed.
